Ready to Support Your Journey
About Our Founder and CEO
María A. Fernández, Ed.M
Welcome! I’m glad you’re here.
At its core, my lifelong work is about helping people embrace and harness their power to change conditions for themselves and their communities to thrive. I bring over 26 years of experience leading leadership development, organizational strengthening, community engagement, and educational initiatives, with impact spanning California, Texas, and nationally. My collaborative work as a senior nonprofit leader, university researcher, government advisor, nonprofit board member, foundation program director, and consultant to various entities within and across the nonprofit, philanthropic, education, faith, private, and government sectors have led to powerful and lasting results for whole communities.
My commitment to social change came from my upbringing in a close-knit Mexican family, the hard work of my parents who came to the U.S. for greater opportunities for our family, and the experiences of love, joy, grief, hardship, and persistence that shaped my life trajectory. Education, my parents’ greatest dream for their children, became my first passion - leading me to work alongside parents and caregivers to advocate for their children, then to leading community-wide youth development initiatives through innovative multi-year community partnerships. Following nearly 15 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, my work led me to San Antonio, Texas to support students, school leaders, and superintendents to change the educational odds for their students, and later leading a national team to motivate educators across the country to organize, change policies, and run for public office to help their communities and cities thrive. That track record of success, hard lessons, and valuable insights has led me to work with a variety of leaders over the years to collectively channel their power for good.
Throughout my organizational and personal journey, I continue to weave my academic insights, work experiences, life lessons, and the values of my ancestors to help leaders across organizations and communities embrace their strengths to create the healing and transformative change that our world needs. Fully bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish, I take great joy in providing services in English and/or Spanish and aligning the right collaborative team of peer consultants and teammates to provide a cohesive support team to our clients. An avid learner, reader, and researcher, I credit my Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Stanford University, a Master’s degree in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Certificate in Diversity & Inclusion from Cornell University for also helping me bring that academic knowledge and campus organizing experience into my work with our clients.
A proud native of Los Angeles, California, I’m also grateful to call San Antonio, Texas my home for the past 12 years. There you can find me enjoying time with my husband, two teenage children, and our spirited dogs, Canelo and Bonbon. I look forward to connecting with you!
